Priming is a phenomenon in which exposure to one stimulus influences how a person responds to a subsequent, related stimulus. These stimuli are often conceptually related words or images.
Prime your brain with a clear vision of your goals by creating a vision board. You must impress your future vision and goals onto your subconscious mind. Then you’ll begin to think and behave in new ways. That will help you take consistent action towards your goals.
Brains love clarity, so your goals must be precise. If you give your brain clarity, then your brain will help you realize (how to) achieve your goals and dreams. You’ll be more resourceful.
Ask yourself, what beliefs and habits do you need? What obstacles will you likely face?
Create a Vision Board
A vision board is a collage or collection of inspiring and motivating visions and quotes. Vision boards remind you of what you already have that’s working, and shows you where you want to go.
Several free apps will let you create a digital vision board. I like to rock it old school.
I actually cut out images, and write out quotes, and stick them in random places like the bathroom mirror or the fridge so I can I look at them throughout the day.
Start with what is most important to you. Then, your logical and emotional brains will work together.
- Family images help you to be grateful, loving and compassionate.
- Use images to represent the lifestyle you want to create
- Use images for your health and weight-loss ideals
- Use images that make it personal and special to you like your birthday, or spirit animal or whatever.
Beyond Arts and Crafts
It’s not enough to create the vision board. You have to actually look at it. This is called putting inspiration in your path, and it’s critical.
If you write an affirmation and read it once, it will do little good. Spaced repetition is crucial to influencing your subconscious mind. It’s the same with your vision board.
It is good to review your vision board daily, The key is consistency. Review it every morning. Or, do what I do, and stick your vision board in random places you’re guaranteed to run into them like the washroom, or the kitchen, or your bedroom.
If you want to boost the power of your vision board, get your emotions involved when you look at your vision board. Imagine stepping into the picture and experiencing the scene through your 5 senses, as though you were there, living it. See the scene with your inner eyes. Hear it with your inner ears, and feel it with your inner feelings.

Cognitive priming can be a double-edged sword. It is a tool that has the potential to work positively, or negatively for you in your life.
You can consciously choose what images and sayings you put into your mind. However, you also take in images and sayings from your environment, from the media you engage in (TV, radio, print, social media, etc).
Ever hear the argument that people become violent because they come from a violent home, or they played violent video games, or they watched violent TV?
This is an example of the dark side of cognitive priming.
Understand that cognitive priming is always happening, consciously or unconsciously. You can ignore or remain unaware of the input you’re getting from your environment. However, you also can consciously choose what you put into your mind, and limit your exposure to negative ideas and images.
It is therefore important to carefully choose what you allow into your brain. Limit your exposure to negative ideas and images. Consider taking a break from the news. There’s a difference between being informed, and being inundated.
